The Duke Mansion in Charlotte's Myers Park is a historic estate that now operates as a boutique hotel and wedding venue. North Carolina ghost lore tells of Jon Avery, a resident who lived there with his children while his wife was institutionalized and who had an affair with a visiting writer, promising her he would come to her dead or alive. According to the story, she met him at midnight a year later and her hand passed through his wrist, only to learn he had died a week before.
