The Biltmore Estate in Asheville is a 250-room French Renaissance-style chateau completed in 1895 for George W. Vanderbilt and still owned by his descendants, the largest private home in America. George died in 1914 after complications from surgery, and his wife, Edith, lived on to remarry and to sell portions of the land. Visitors and staff report shadowy figures, whispers and the sounds of clinking glasses, laughter and music from parties long past, with a figure said to be Vanderbilt in the library during storms and a voice whispering George.
Ticketed daily admission with house tours, gardens, winery and hotels on the estate; book ahead, especially in fall and December.
