The Clown Motel in Tonopah, built around 1985 by the siblings Leona and LeRoy David and filled with hundreds of clown figures and dolls, is known as America's scariest motel. It sits beside the Old Tonopah Cemetery, established in 1901, where victims of the 1902 Tonopah plague and miners killed in the 1911 Tonopah-Belmont mine fire are buried; the motel's creator's father, Clarence David, a miner who loved clowns, is buried there. Ghost Adventures featured the motel and described the paranormal activity as unusually high, with a housekeeper reporting extreme anxiety in the rooms and doors that shut by themselves. Room 108 is themed after the film It and is the one most often called haunted.
Operating motel on Main Street with themed rooms, a gift shop and a clown collection. The adjacent cemetery is a historic burial ground, so visit it in daylight and respectfully.
