Caribou was a silver-mining town on a windswept ridge near the Continental Divide, founded after a rich silver strike in 1869 and abandoned by about 1920 after silver prices crashed and fires swept the town. Today a few stone miners' ruins and one wooden house remain, and former streets are footpaths. Its name lives on indirectly: when the town of Nederland was incorporated in 1874, it took the name of the Dutch company that bought Caribou's mill.
Reached by a rough dirt road that is best driven in summer; expect little standing and bring layers for the wind.
