Staff at the Seven Keys Lodge describe Ethel Mace still occupying her old room, seated in a wing-back rocker by the fire, and guests trying to smoke there find their cigarettes mysteriously put out. Gordon and Ethel Mace built the Baldpate Inn in 1917, naming it for the mystery novel Seven Keys to Baldpate, in which a single hotel key supposedly opens every door in the building; guests took the joke literally, and the inn's key collection has since grown to more than 20,000 keys sent in from visitors worldwide. The Mace family lost the property in 1986, and new owners renamed it Seven Keys Lodge in 2020.
Formerly the Baldpate Inn, renamed Seven Keys Lodge in 2020. Open in summer, with a steakhouse and tavern Wednesday through Saturday evenings; closed Monday and Tuesday and in the off-season.
