Bannack is a National Historic Landmark and the site of Montana's first major gold discovery, in July 1862, and it served as the first territorial capital. Its population passed 3,000 by 1863 before the gold dwindled, and about fifty log and frame buildings still line Main Street, many open to walk through. The visitor center runs guided tours in summer, with Bannack Days in July and a reservation-only Ghost Walk in October.
State park with a campground; the visitor center is open Memorial Day to Labor Day, and the town can be walked on your own any time.
