The 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home and Museum in Independence housed prisoners until 1933 and held Frank James, brother of Jesse James, for nearly six months. The best-known spirit is a lawman, Henry Bugler, who was killed at the jail in 1866 and is said to be seen in the center south cell in a blue suit. Visitors describe nausea, sudden extreme cold, footsteps and a man gasping for air. The jail is on Independence's tourism paranormal passport, and the Jackson County Historical Society offers guided paranormal tours.
Open as a museum in season with a small admission; paranormal tours run on select dates. Check the Jackson County Historical Society's site.
