The White Horse Tavern in Newport, which opened in 1673, is billed as the oldest tavern still operating in the United States. It has been a courthouse, a meeting place for colonists and British soldiers, pirates and sailors, and a private home. Discover Newport and local ghost tours describe an elderly man in colonial clothes, a sailor who died on the premises and a woman who floats above a dining table; staff report being tapped on the shoulder and hear footsteps from empty rooms.
Working restaurant; reservations are recommended, and Ghost Tours of Newport include the tavern.
