Beechwood, the Newport summer home of the Astor family, was built in the 1850s and became famous when Caroline Astor, the Mrs. Astor of Gilded Age society, entertained there. It was for years a living-history museum with actors playing the Astors and their servants, and Ghost Hunters (TAPS) investigated it in the show's second season. Staff stories described a telephone repairman who was electrocuted in the basement, a woman in a yellow dress on the spiral staircase, blowing-out candles and footsteps on a secret stair. The house was sold in 2010 and is no longer a public museum.
Private property and not open to visitors. It can be seen from Bellevue Avenue; please respect the owners and do not trespass.
