West Baden Springs, Indiana

The West Baden Springs Hotel, topped by a 200-foot dome that was once the largest in the world, opened in 1902 as a Gilded Age resort and today is part of the French Lick Resort. Visit Indiana lists the hotel and its sister French Lick Springs Hotel among the state's haunted places. Guests and staff report echoing footsteps in empty corridors, shadowy figures drifting past doorways and lights that flicker, and some say the spirit of Thomas Taggart, who owned the neighboring resort, walks both properties. Stories of guests ruined by the 1929 crash and of a bride who died in a bathtub are retold on tours, but they are legend rather than documented. The hotel is a working resort.
Working resort hotel open to overnight guests; the atrium and public areas can be visited, and history tours are offered through French Lick Resort. Check the resort for current hours.
