The gravestone of Floyd E. Pruett (1894-1920) at this Orange County cemetery bears a real, documented curiosity that's drawn folklorists' attention for decades — an engraved chain motif, formed into a cross, whose link count is said to change between visits. Local accounts differ on Pruett's story: one holds he died in a limestone quarry accident, accidentally strangled by a chain used to raise stone; another tells of a soldier who went off to war and was killed, buried while his sweetheart watched the funeral from across the road, never able to join him. Indiana State University's folklore archive has recorded the legend directly from local tellers. Visitors say the chain in the stone still seems to grow.
Rural church cemetery in Orange County. Visit in daylight and treat the graves with respect; the linked-chain marker on one stone is a curiosity, so please don't touch or damage it.
