Union Cemetery in Hackettstown is a Victorian-era burial ground best known for the monument to Tillie Smith, a young domestic servant at the Centenary Collegiate Institute who was murdered in 1886. The unsolved case drew national attention, and local legend says a young woman in white is seen on the road in front of the cemetery and walking toward town. The stories are local lore, and the monument is a quiet memorial to a real victim.
