The Treadwell mines on Douglas Island employed up to 2,000 people from 17 countries between 1882 and 1922, when part of the workings caved into the sea in 1917 and the operation was abandoned. A signed historical trail passes the concrete New Office Building, the glory hole and the collapse site, with crumbling walls, rails and foundations in the forest and a pump house standing offshore.
Self-guided trail in Douglas near Savikko Park; guided tours are offered seasonally.
