Gus Messerschmidt, an Austrian baker, opened a bakery on this Juneau block in 1898, the oldest in Alaska. He died in 1938. The building that carries his name has been stitched together from several older structures and now houses the Silverbow Inn, a small hotel. Guests up early have described a man's presence in the old bakery kitchen in the small hours, taken to be Messerschmidt and described as welcoming rather than frightening. Others report footsteps in empty hallways, faint music, shadows crossing upstairs windows, and sudden drops in temperature.
