The Trails and Rails Museum in Kearney is run by the Buffalo County Historical Society and gathers eight historic buildings, including the 1884 Loup River Freighters Hotel, a train depot, a one-room schoolhouse, a 1900 German Baptist church, a livery barn, and a Union Pacific engine and caboose. Local news coverage describes it as haunted. The freighters hotel is called one of the most haunted buildings on the grounds, with visitors reporting rocking chairs that move on their own and figures in mirrors in their photographs. Paranormal investigators have named a spirit called Betty, said to be the depot manager's wife, at the depot, and reported shadowy figures and voices at the church.
Open in season, with hours generally 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 on Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day, shorter hours the rest of the year. Ghost hunts are offered by appointment when investigators are available.
