Opened by Universal Pictures on January 1, 1927, as the Strand Theatre — for more than 40 years the largest movie house in the Jonesboro area — this Neo-Georgian building closed in 1974, was acquired by the city in the late 1970s, and reopened restored as the Forum Theatre, now home to Jonesboro's Foundation of Arts. A ghost nicknamed Charlie has been part of the building's story for decades: he's been reported in the attic, the catwalk, the boiler room, the balcony, and the old projection room, described in different clothing by different witnesses over the years. One account describes cast and crew watching a still-crated grand piano begin playing a recognizable tune by itself as it was being delivered, long before anyone had removed its packaging.
The Forum Theatre operates as a working performance venue and community arts space; check the Foundation of Arts' event calendar for public shows.
