Ship Creek is where Anchorage itself began — in 1915, a tent city of more than 2,000 railroad workers sprang up at its mouth, and the settlement went on to grow into the city that stands today. Local folklore holds that a protective spirit still watches over the area, especially near where the old ANS Hospital once stood by the Alaska Railroad terminal — said to appear to homeless Alaska Native people who pass through and gently warn them not to linger too long.
