The Hotel Captain Cook opened in 1965, built by Walter Hickel in the year after the Good Friday earthquake as a statement that Anchorage would rebuild, and it has grown into three towers downtown. It has the city's longest-running collection of ghost stories. Staff and guests describe a woman in a white dress, apparently in her twenties, in a women's restroom near the last stall, and lights and doors working on their own nearby. Some visitors report a hand closing around theirs near the second tower, and at least one guest described a child standing and smiling inside a closet. The story that ties the woman to a suicide on the night the second tower opened in 1972 is often repeated, but no record of such a death has been found.
