Bethel Cemetery, between Mattoon and Neoga in Coles County, is better known locally as the Ragdoll Cemetery. The legend, told in several versions, centers on a young girl — some say around eight or nine — who died of illness or, in darker tellings, was murdered, and whose beloved rag doll was never buried with her. Visitors say the doll can still be seen wandering the small graveyard, searching for the grave it was meant to rest in.
Small rural cemetery between Mattoon and Neoga. Many old markers are fallen or overgrown in the woods beside the cemetery, so watch your footing, visit during daylight and leave everything where it lies.
