St. Omer Cemetery in Ashmore holds an unusual family monument — a large stone orb resting on a base of crisscrossed logs, marking the grave of Caroline Barnes. Local legend holds that Caroline was executed for practicing witchcraft, and points to her tombstone's engraved date of death, February 31 — a date that doesn't exist — as proof the date was deliberately falsified to keep her from returning from the dead. No historical record supports the witchcraft claim; the monument's orb-and-logs design is fairly conventional cemetery symbolism representing faith and enduring life. Visitors nonetheless report that photographs of the monument never turn out, and that it sometimes glows faintly on moonless nights.
Rural cemetery north of Ashmore. Visit during daylight and treat the graves with respect; the unusual monument is a family gravestone, so please don't climb on it or damage it.
