The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon at the foot of Broad Street was built by 1771 as a customs house and exchange and was used as a prison by the British during the Revolution; its cellar dungeon is said to have held prisoners, among them pirates. Charleston tourism lists it among the city's haunted places, citing creaking floors, chains that seem to swing and moans in the dungeon, along with cold spots and doors that close on their own upstairs. It is now a museum.
Museum open daily with a dungeon tour; check hours. Charleston ghost tours also stop outside.
