Nebraska Wesleyan University's best-known ghost story belongs to Clara Mills, a beloved professor of piano, music theory and music history who taught there for 28 years and died of an apparent heart attack in her office on April 12, 1940. In October 1963 a secretary in the C.C. White Building, now the Smith-Curtis Administration Building, reported seeing a tall, slender woman with black hair in a white blouse and long skirt standing with her back to her at a cabinet, and sensed a man at a desk. She said the view from the windows looked decades old, with no modern streets and no sorority house outside, and she left frightened. The story became a national news item, and the university tells it on its own website. Sightings are still reported in Old Main, Smith-Curtis and the Rogers Center for Fine Arts.
Private university campus; the grounds can be walked, and the buildings are working academic buildings that are not open for ghost tours. Please respect staff and students.
