The Naples Hotel is said to be haunted by "Topper," a man who died by suicide on the third floor, whom the owners blame for whispers, artwork that seems to move, flickering lights, TVs switching on and off, coat hangers left dangling from a bathroom light and a third-floor door that locked itself from the inside. Staff have seen a woman named Alice sitting in the front dining room and her two children at an upstairs window, and reports add two men in one room who flicker flashlights, a woman in a front room whose lilac scent fills the space, a Civil War soldier coming down the basement steps and a girl named Belle. The Ghost Hunters team investigated in the Season 8 episode "Buyer Beware," which aired January 18, 2012. The hotel's owners told them of activity since a suicide in the 1920s, including a waitress who had an ice cube fly past her face; during the investigation Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson heard a conversation from the third floor followed by a loud scream, and a light fixture fell on its own after they called out to Topper. The hotel began as Lyon Tavern in 1818, built by Simeon Lyon as a stop on the Geneva-to-Bath stagecoach line, and the brick building standing today replaced it in 1895. It has 32 rooms, a restaurant and a basement bar. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
