The first Key West lighthouse, built in 1825, was destroyed in the Great Havana Hurricane of 1846, which killed 14 people who had taken shelter in the tower, among them members of the family of keeper Barbara Mabrity, who survived. The present tower was rebuilt in 1848 and now stands beside the Keeper's Quarters Museum. Local ghost stories tell of Mabrity herself, said to climb and descend the stairs to tend the light, and all reports describe her as friendly. Ghost Files climbed the tower in "The Harrowing Ascent Up Key West's Haunted Lighthouse" (2026).
Museum and tower open daily (about 10 to 5); climbing the tower involves a steep stair, so check conditions and hours.
