The ghost story told at the Kennedy School is of a young girl: a bartender in the Boiler Room Bar told a National Geographic writer that a guest had described her in detail, down to the bows on her shoes, sitting in a chair, and that he sometimes leaves a chair down at night in case of an eerie presence. Some say she took her own life after school in her classroom, but, as he put it, no one really knows, and the origin of the story is unknown. The school was built in 1915 as an elementary school, was abandoned by the 1990s and was converted by McMenamins into a hotel, movie theater, brewery and restaurant; many of its guest rooms are former classrooms, and murals of children cover the walls. It is on Portland's haunted lists, including National Geographic's.
Working hotel, pub and theater open to the public; the grounds and common areas can be walked during the day.
