The Indiana State Sanatorium east of Rockville was the state's main tuberculosis hospital from about 1908 to 1968, built on hundreds of acres with long open-air porches for the fresh-air treatment of the day, and it later served as a nursing home and a mental hospital. Visit Indiana lists it among the state's haunted places. The property's current owners offer self-guided daytime tours, after-dark flashlight tours, ghost hunts and private overnight paranormal investigations, and describe disembodied voices, apparitions and poltergeist activity among the former wards. Because many patients died of tuberculosis there, the stories are told as part of a sober history of the disease. The stories are visitor and investigator lore.
Privately run historic site with self-guided tours daily from about 10 am to 5 pm (around $25), flashlight tours after dark, and overnight paranormal investigations by booking. Check the sanatorium's site for current hours and prices.
