Part of this state natural area near Georgetown was once Camp Cherokee Hills, run by the Piankeshaw Council of the Boy Scouts of America, before the land was sold to the State of Illinois in 1996 and folded into the Harry "Babe" Woodyard State Natural Area. Visitors describe hearing voices, drumming, and what sounds like pounding on wood deep in the woods, along with orbs and apparitions captured in photos and video — including the recurring figure of an older woman seen near the parking area, seeming to welcome visitors in.
State natural area open from sunrise to sunset, including land that was once a Boy Scout camp. Hunting is permitted in season, so wear blaze orange in the fall. Stay on the trails and leave the old camp structures alone.
