Gothic grew after a silver strike in 1879 and had around a thousand residents before silver prices collapsed, leaving it nearly empty by the early 1900s. A biologist bought the townsite in 1928 and it became the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, which still uses about 70 buildings, some from the mining boom. Tourism pieces repeat ghost stories, but none could be confirmed.
Active research station; visit in summer on the public road and respect the lab's property.
