Fort Washita near Durant was built in 1842 as a frontier army post to protect the Chickasaw and Choctaw nations, was occupied by Confederate forces in the Civil War and now operates as a historic site. TravelOK lists it among Oklahoma's most haunted places. The best-known story is Aunt Jane, a headless female ghost said to have been killed by thieves who wanted to know where she had hidden money, and the Bohanan cabin is said to be especially haunted. Reenactors and visitors have told these stories for years.
Historic site with ruins and a museum; check the site for hours and special events, including evening tours in the fall.
