The Fort Shelby Hotel opened in 1918 as a ten-story hotel in downtown Detroit and was expanded to twenty-one stories in 1927. After it closed and sat empty, it was restored and reopened as a hotel in 2011. The legend tells of a homeless man named Al who slept in the abandoned building and was killed when a pipe burst, and a skeleton is said to have been found before the renovation. Staff and guests say his spirit walks the halls and lobby and is helpful rather than frightening. The story is a long-told piece of Detroit hotel lore and appears on Michigan haunted-hotel lists.
An operating hotel in downtown Detroit; rooms can be booked and the lobby is open to guests and visitors.
