Eloise began in 1839 as the Wayne County Poorhouse and grew into a sprawling campus of more than 70 buildings that served at different times as a poor farm, general hospital, psychiatric hospital and tuberculosis sanatorium. Thousands of patients lived and died here, and many were buried on the grounds. Workers and visitors describe voices, footsteps and a feeling of being watched in the buildings that remain, one of the best-known haunted places in the Detroit area. A section of the campus now runs paranormal tours and haunted attractions, which should be understood as entertainment built on a history of real suffering.
Tours are run by the site, including paranormal tours on most Saturday evenings and seasonal attractions; tickets are required. Check the site's schedule before going.
