Founded May 27, 1827, when the Reverend Murdoch Murphy of the Alabama Synod organized a congregation of fifteen families here, Euchee Valley Presbyterian was once the largest Presbyterian church in Florida, a distinction it held until 1885. Its cemetery holds more than 3,000 graves, many unmarked, including two signers of Florida's first constitution, civic leaders, ministers, and veterans of every American war back to the Revolution. Visitors describe a malevolent spirit said to chase off anyone who lingers after dark, children's laughter heard from the overgrowth outside the cemetery with no children in sight, and a large stone ball atop one grave in the southeast corner that some say can be seen and heard slowly rotating on moonlit nights.
