Local legend holds that in the early 1900s, a young girl and her little brother cut through the graveyard next to Black Creek's old 1800s church on their way home and were chased by a bear into the church bell tower, where they were killed. Longtime residents say that at the stroke of midnight you can still hear children screaming and a bear roaring near where the tower stood. When a new church was built, the old bell tower was carefully disassembled and relocated out of state, and the legend has quieted since.
