The Equinox, a grand historic resort in Manchester Village, is widely called the most haunted hotel in Vermont and appears in Thea Lewis's book on Vermont's haunted inns. Its best-known story is that of Mary Todd Lincoln, who stayed in the summer of 1864 with her family and is said to wander the third-floor halls of the south wing, sometimes with a small child. Accounts disagree on which of her sons the child is, and some mention a boy in a hooded shirt or sudden cold spots and whispers. The tales are guest and staff lore.
