Skagway, Alaska

Dyea was the port where Klondike gold seekers landed to climb the Chilkoot Trail in 1897 and 1898, then emptied after the White Pass railroad chose Skagway's deeper harbor. Foundations, the ruins of a wharf and three cemeteries remain among the trees in Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, and one cemetery holds many people killed in a single 1898 avalanche on the trail. The Taiya River is eroding more of the townsite every year.
About a 25-minute drive from Skagway; interpretive panels and short trails.
