Hikers near the Illinois Monument at Cheatham Hill report hearing marching orders called out and the sound of footsteps from a large body of men moving through the woods, and photographs taken at the site have turned up unexplained fog and shapes that weren't visible when the picture was taken. Cheatham Hill was the site of the bloodiest fighting of the June 27, 1864 Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, a spot both sides nicknamed the "Dead Angle": Union columns from Newton's and Davis's divisions attacked Confederate earthworks held by Cheatham's and Cleburne's divisions, and one Union brigade lost two commanders, nearly all its field officers and a third of its men. In 1914, surviving Illinois veterans dedicated a 25-foot white marble monument on the earthworks where so many of their fellow soldiers fell.
Part of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, free to enter and open daily from early morning until evening. The parking area closes earlier than the trails. Stay on marked trails and do not disturb earthworks.
