Established in 1863 originally to bury 20 Confederate soldiers killed in a train wreck north of town, Marietta Confederate Cemetery grew into one of the largest Confederate burial grounds in the country, now holding more than 3,000 soldiers from all 13 Confederate states plus Maryland, Missouri, and Kentucky. Nighttime visitors describe several apparitions across the grounds, including a small child reported near one of the family headstones.
Marietta Confederate Cemetery is open daily from dawn to dusk and is free to enter. It is a military burial ground, so visit quietly and stay on the paths.
