Chatham Manor, a Georgian house built around 1771 on a bluff across the Rappahannock from Fredericksburg, served as a Union headquarters and hospital during the Civil War and is now a National Park Service site. Its legend is the White Lady, a young English woman said to have been kept at the house to end a romance, whose ghost walks a garden path and is said to return every seven years. The details vary, and the Park Service does not allow ghost tours on the grounds, so it is folklore.
