Camp Hale was built in 1942 to train the Army's 10th Mountain Division in skiing and mountain warfare before they fought in Italy, and it closed in 1965. Few buildings are left, but foundations, the old field-house ruins and climbing rocks mark the valley, and in 2022 it became the Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument. The Forest Service warns of possible unexploded ordnance and asbestos, so stay on roads and trails.
