Bentonville Battlefield was the site of the largest battle fought in North Carolina, March 19 to 21, 1865, in the last months of the Civil War, when Confederate forces under General Joseph Johnston attacked Union troops advancing under General William T. Sherman. The Harper House served as a Union field hospital. The state historic site tells that story, and visitors and haunted-places lists report hearing gunfire and shouting around the trenches at night, along with other unexplained sounds.
State historic site with a visitor center, the restored Harper House and walking trails, open on a seasonal schedule; check the site for hours.
