Robert Allerton (1873-1964) built this mansion and its formal gardens starting in 1899, later donating the estate to the University of Illinois in 1946 as a public park and retreat center. Visitors and staff describe a "Lady in White," believed to be a frequent guest during the estate's early years and identifiable in old photographs, seen walking along the pond behind the mansion, in a bedroom associated with her putting on hats and gloves, and heard descending the stairs and pacing the hallway outside that room. Her identity has never been established.
Allerton Park is a University of Illinois park open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset with free admission; the visitor center is open daily. The mansion itself is not open for walk-in visits, but monthly public tours are offered with registration.
