Sumpter, Oregon
Map: © OpenStreetMap contributors — approximate location, not a photo of the site
Whitney was a lumber town that grew around a mill and became the main station of the narrow-gauge Sumpter Valley Railway after it arrived in 1901. A 1918 fire at the lumber mill hurt it and the railway closed in 1947, though the post office lasted until 1943. A handful of wood buildings stand among working farms, and some are still occupied.
Roadside stop on Highway 7; the homes and farms are private.
