Built in 1864-66 by John Good as the Tivoli Brewery, Colorado's first brewery and only the second in the nation, the building took its name from Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens; some of its original brewing equipment is still on display. It survived Prohibition by producing a low-alcohol "cereal beverage" before finally closing in 1969. When Denver's urban-renewal project created the tri-institutional Auraria Campus in the 1970s, the brewery building was preserved and reopened in October 1994 as the shared student union for the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and the Community College of Denver. Students and staff describe voices through the third-floor vents that sound like an ongoing party, whispers in the restrooms, and the presence of workers said to have died on the job during the building's brewery years — along with a little girl some say died in a house that once stood where one of the building's wings is now.
