Security staff at the Colorado State Capitol and several nearby state buildings describe a woman in a long dress seen repeatedly over the years, along with voices, footsteps, closing doors and cold spots. Designed by Elijah E. Myers and built from Colorado white granite, the Capitol opened for use in 1894 and was completed in 1903, modeled on the U.S. Capitol in Washington. Its dome was originally meant to be copper, but the legislature had it covered in gold leaf in 1908, about 200 ounces pounded paper-thin, to honor the state's gold rush history.
State Capitol, open weekdays. Free guided tours run on the hour in the middle of the day, and summer brings dome-only tours.
