The Glen D. Palmer Dam on the Fox River at Yorkville has claimed at least 26 lives since it was built in 1952 — its low profile deceives boaters and paddlers into thinking they can cross it safely, when in fact the water's roller effect traps and drowns anyone caught in it. Locals report seeing a family of three walking from the dam back toward the riverfront around 1 a.m. on Saturdays — a father carrying a canoe paddle, a crying mother, and a young girl holding a life jacket — before they vanish partway back. Given the dam's real, ongoing danger, it should be viewed from a distance only; never attempt to cross or approach it by boat.
View the dam from Bicentennial Riverfront Park on the river's south bank. The current below a low-head dam can trap and drown people. Never wade, swim or boat near it; paddlers must use the separate bypass chute.
