Opened in 1922 by Emil Kobal as a tavern and small grocery on the ground floor, with the family's home above, the Country House has carried its ghost story since the 1950s: a woman whose feelings for a bartender working there went unreturned sped away from the restaurant and died in a car crash nearby. She's been seen in the upstairs windows, blocking the bathroom door, wandering the dining room, and hovering by the jukebox to play her favorite songs, along with reports of footsteps, a crying baby, and pounding on the walls — activity that reportedly increased after a 1974 renovation. Some connect the haunting to a 1961 plane crash that killed 78 people in a field about six blocks south of the restaurant.
