Built around 1920 as part of the old Quitman Highway spanning the Withlacoochee River on the Lowndes-Brooks county line, this bridge was closed to traffic by the 1970s once the surrounding road fell out of use, and it has stood abandoned and overgrown ever since — the subject of a locally produced 2016 documentary film. Decades of local legend describe star-crossed lovers, an unsolved murder, and rumors of Satanic rituals at the site, though none are documented history. Its best-known story is that of the Phantom Driver: visitors report a car's headlights approaching across the bridge late at night, only for the vehicle to vanish before it arrives.
Abandoned 1920s bridge on a closed section of Old Quitman Highway over the Withlacoochee River. It is decaying and unsafe, so do not walk on it, and the surrounding land is private. Paddle trips on the river pass beneath it.
