South Seas Resort occupies the site of a key lime plantation established in 1923 by Clarence Chadwick; the property has weathered repeated hurricanes over the decades, most recently a near-total shutdown after Hurricane Ian in 2022, and reopened in full following a $1 billion rebuild completed in 2025. Staff say a baker who died in employee housing still haunts Room 51, where orbs have shown up in photos and footsteps and a presence have been reported. At the King's Crown restaurant, employees describe hearing a piano playing after closing with no one at the keys, and finding rolled silverware dumped out or rearranged into a zig-zag pattern — said to be the handiwork of a former manager who died on the property and kept his sense of humor.
