Dr. Alexander Chandler opened the San Marcos in 1913 as the centrepiece of the town he was planning, the first steel-reinforced building in Arizona and home to the state's first golf course; Fred Astaire, Clark Gable and President Hoover all stayed. It operates today as the Crowne Plaza Phoenix–Chandler Golf Resort after several million dollars of renovation. Staff describe calls reaching the front desk from room extensions that do not exist, a man's moaning with no source, and a woman's figure moving through the building; some connect it to the portrait of Dr. Chandler that still hangs on the property.
The San Marcos operates as a full-service hotel open to guests and diners.
