The Randolph County Infirmary, built in 1899 on the site of an earlier county poor farm, housed the county's poor, sick, elderly and orphaned, as well as people with mental illness and unwed mothers, and unlike many county homes it stayed open past the 1930s. About five hundred residents are recorded as dying there, and those whose families did not claim them were buried in an unmarked cemetery on the grounds. Visit Indiana lists it among the state's haunted places, and the property is open for guided tours and overnight paranormal investigations. Visitors report slamming doors, apparitions, dolls that move, footsteps, children's voices and a tricycle in the attic that rolls by itself. The stories are visitor and investigator lore, set against the real history of those who lived and died there.
Privately operated historic site open for scheduled tours and overnight paranormal investigations run by outside groups such as American Hauntings; check the listings for dates and tickets before visiting.
